Woman: What is she getting her BA in again? medicine?
Man: Yeah... [pause] You know, I think it's like, what's that other thing called, again? humanities?
Woman: Oh yeah! That's it!
Man: Well they're pretty much the same anyway
Man and woman on the bus in Berkeley. Why doesn't *anyone* seem to know what a humanity subject is??

Humanities and dreams of life
Posted by Intelligirly on Thu, 09/02/2004 - 3:28pm.
I was English literature, with a theatre minor. I'm fairly useless as well. I like to read and pretend--neither one of which is terribly helpful in the job market. I'd be fabulous at some jobs, and some jobs people SHOULD have, but since I don't want to teach ever, I'm stuck.

What I'd really like to do is live for a year on a whaling research vessel tracking and studying humpback whales and then writing a book about it to fire up the layperson who won't/doesn't understand all the scientific stuff written by people who have studied in order to have the same experience. Truly. This is my dream. I'm not kidding. So if anyone can get me anywhere close to that, I will be forever grateful and may even kiss you. :) Or give you a cookie.
If med school was only 4 years long...

and as relatively easy as humanities...
Then I would have majored in it. Hell yeah.

(This is not to knock humanities--I'm just a lot better at liberal arts type stuff than math and science.)

No worries

My degree is in English, with a Philosophy minor. The only way it could be more useless would be if I had a degree in Philosophy, with an English minor. So you see, I really have no room to knock humanities, even if I wanted to. ;)

(I thought I was going to be a librarian, which would have involved going on for a master's in Library Science, but the Children's Lit requirement was more than I could bear.)
