"What kind of 7-Eleven actually closes at 11? I lived in the suburbs and we had two. No one ever went in them but kids from the high school buying hot dogs at lunch, and they were still both open 24/7. What kind of town is this, anyway? Berkeley should be a college town!"
--A guy ranting to his friends in the Durant Food Court
I agree -- where's the convenience in a convenience store that's not open at 2am on a Sunday when you have a cs project due in 10 hours and you're sleepy, and your eyes feel dry from staring at the monitor, and dear lord you need caffiene more than you need your soul right now, so maybe you'd sell it for some...
Er, I'd better get back to work on that project.

The only 7/11 in our town closed at 7:00 pm (8:00 in the summer). Don't know when it opened. Now it's closed altogether.

ok, just wondering...if 7-11's are supposed to be open 24/7, why do they have locks on the doors?

p.s. A friend of mine asked a 7-11 employee the above question. His reply? "Um, we're open 24 hours a day, but not like, um, in a row"

At least y'all had 7-11 in Berkley. I went to U of Florida and there isn't one in Gainesville. I complained about it for 4 years. The when I moved to Maryland, I learned we have them on every street corner.

Come to Poultryville, a college town just west of the Blue Ridge. The only "mall" in town is anchored by J C Penney and Walmart; the rest of the stores are totally forgettable. Most businesses not located in the mall are closed on Sunday. There's no good place to go if you want to sit and talk later in the evening with a date or spouse or friends without being bombarded by such loud music that yelling is necessary to talk to the person sitting next to you. This place is dead for a college town--especially one with 14,000 students!
My daughter was right when she referred to this town
as "Hicksville just north of Bumf---."

(hope this works)

The same links site that first led me to this site also had a hilarious primer for people who wanted revenge on 7-11 employees for whatever slights they may have committed against you. Clicking on my name should take you there. If not, the page is in part 7 of the links page at twoey.com.

7-11 has locks on the doors so that they lock the store after robbers leave. It gives the clerks time to pocket a little cash before they let the cops in.

This one kind of reminds me of a Steven Right joke.

I was going to 7-11 one night to pick up some powdered water. When I got there the guy was locking up. I said "Hey, your sign says you are open 24 hours" he said, "Yeah, not in a row."

To be read in a dull monotone voice.

Devil Dogs are a snack food so sinfully delicious you will probably go to hell from the gluttony of them but my oh my are they worth it.

They fall into the Hostess Yodel category, but you only go to Purgatory for Yodels...

It's 4 am. My thesis is due in 4 hours. I haven't slept in 6 days. I ran out of Devil Dogs at 3:17. If only the local convient store were open I could've avoided those schizophrenic episodes...

7/11 is allowed to close one day of the year, each store can choose the holiday. hence, using the locks.

I guess I'm just not hep to the value of overpriced "convenience" stores when most of the grocery stores around here are also open 24 hours a day.

Well, in England we dont have proper 7-11's, just a few stores who try to be trendy and American which call themselves 7-11's, and quite rightly too, as they do shut at 11. Or in most cases, 10. It really sucks having to walk half a mile to the nearest 24 hour petrol station when I get the urge for a cigarette in the early hours of the morning.

Today, offering customers 24-hour convenience, seven
days a week is the cornerstone of 7-Eleven's business.

I'm told that Berkeley's licensing laws make it difficult to stay open 24-hours. Paper beats rock. Paperwork defeats cornerstone. Fortunately, Berkeley is the home of Peet's, your source for strong, tasty coffee fixin's.

As Anonymous pointed out, the name 7-11 did in fact originate from the hours the stores were open. As for why they still have locks on the doors (which Steff referred to), as explained in one of David Feldman's "Imponderables" books, they're there for security reasons - i.e., the one guy working at 3 am has to go and use the restroom.

The name 7-Eleven originated in 1946 when the stores were open from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. Today, offering customers 24-hour convenience, seven days a week is the cornerstone of 7-Eleven's business.

you're clouding joe. stop it. =) i've never met a 7-11 that closes at eleven... i think they're just trying to justify having locks on their doors. decidedly INconvenient.

Agreed. But the name IS 7-Eleven, and they DID close at eleven . . . do they open at seven? Or am I now clouding the issue with facts?
