Stop running. Can't be chased if you're not running.

Or, in a better scenario, they'll keep running after you've stopped and go over a really high cliff to their doom!

This weekend I went to the Renaissance Faire in Sterling NY with my son. They had, of course, a Queen Elizabeth walking around officiating things and posing for pictures and whatnot. So every time I saw her and her retinue walking past I whistled "Scotland the Brave". You'd think that at least one of the reenactors would have caught that and reacted...

And toward the end of our time there we caught the end of an act at which the queen was officiating, and when the major-domo (or whatever he was supposed to be) led the cheer of "God save the queen!" I turned to my son and snarled "We really mean it, maaaan!" I wouldn't have thought that the Sex Pistols were an obscure reference, but not one single person in the audience around us reacted.

Disappointing.

She’s come Undun.
She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
It was too late.

She’s come Undun.
She found a mountain that was far too high,
And when she found out she couldn’t fly,
It was too late.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.

She’s come Undun.
She wanted truth but all she got was lies.
Came the time to realize,
And it was too late.

She’s come Undun.
She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
Mama it was too late.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun
She’s come Undun.

Too many mountains and not enough stairs to climb.
Too many churches and not enough truth.
Too many people and not enough eyes to see.
Too many lives to lead and not enough time.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.
She’s come Undun.

It’s too late.
She’s gone too far.
She’s lost the sun.
She’s come Undun.

She didn’t know what she was headed for,
And when I found what she was headed for,
It was too late.
She’s come Undun.
She found a mountain that was far too high,
And when she found out she couldn’t fly,

It’s too late.

i know, i know... but that's how it's titled on the cd, that's what the liner notes say, etc., etc., etc.

i admit i considered changing it, but the artistic purist usually konks the spelling purist on the head and stuffs her in the closet. *shrug* she never learns.

It's Undun because The Guess Who decided to spell it that way. It's not good, or bad, it just is what it is. It was that way on the LP and the cassette, too.

That is all.

The river flows
It flows to the sea
Wherever that river goes
That's where I want to be
Flow river flow
Let your waters wash down
Take me from this road
To some other town

All he wanted
Was to be free
And that's the way
It turned out to be
Flow river flow
Let your waters wash down
Take me from this road
To some other town

Flow river flow
Past the shaded tree
Go river, go
Go to the sea
Flow to the sea

The river flows
It flows to the sea
Wherever that river goes
That's where I want to be
Flow river flow
Let your waters wash down
Take me from this road
To some other town...

Just seemed appropriate, well, to me. :^P

Long as I remember The rain been comin' down.
Clouds of myst'ry pourin' Confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages, Tryin' to find the sun;
And I wonder, Still I wonder, Who'll stop the rain.

I went down Virginia, Seekin' shelter from the storm.
Caught up in the fable, I watched the tower grow.
Five year plans and new deals, Wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin', How we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together, Tryin' to keep warm.
Still the rain kept pourin', Fallin' on my ears.
And I wonder, Still I wonder Who'll stop the rain.
Guess what I got yesterday...

...a kitten!

He's an orange tabby (or tiger, if you prefer), seven weeks old, with little grey eyes and a voice like a violin string. He's very cute and playful, of course, but he's also the snuggliest little beast I've ever met- if he had his way he'd sit on my shoulder all day purring in my ear.

His real name is Malcolm, but because he still has the little kitten claws that he can't quite fully retract and therefore gets stuck as he walks, he's also known as Thistletoes.

And this is your newsfluff for the day.

It's well we cannot hear the screams

A semantic poetic moment
Posted by daen on Sat, 07/24/2004 - 12:18pm.
Do you really mean "call him something silly" or "name him something silly?" If the latter, I worry for you.

What you call a cat, as long as it's in the privacy of your own home, is up to you.
What you name a cat is of entirely more import.
I can do no better than to quote TS Eliot on this important point.

On the Naming of Cats
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't one of your holiday games:
You may think at first that I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES
First of all, there's the name that the family uses daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey --
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter --
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignifed,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his wiskers, or cherish pride?
Of names of this kind, can I give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellyorum --
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name you will never guess:
The name that no human research can discover --
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditaion,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name.

My cat was a huge long-haired black cat. Her fancy name was Ekaterina Velika, but she was generally known as Cathey Cat. She was a trained attack cat, a surprisingly poor yet enthusiasatic vocalist, and a voracious reader (by means of osmosis). She was the most emotionally sensitive cat that I ever knew; whenever there was a major change in the household, she would develop symptoms of OCD.
I still miss her.

Malcolm seems to be quite happy with his name, and seems to be accepting of being called Thistletoes. However, he did not take kindly to me holding his little paws and trimming the points off of his claws. In fact, he got quite irate and flopped around like a fish while making sounds like Yoko Ono, but he's just going to have to learn to deal with it.

Cats... I loved seeing the Broadway version. It's either one you love or you really hate, I think. Reminds me of a friend of mine who saw it and hated it (and the other friend who made him go):

"It was boring! There wasn't any plot!"
"Of course there wasn't a plot - it's based on a book of poems you nimrod!"
"Really? No wonder I didn't get it - I hate poetry!"

Father & Son:

Father
It's not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Son
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Father
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

Son
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

I Love My Dog:

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All he asks from me is the food to give him strength
All he ever needs is love and that he knows he'll get

So, I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

All the pay I need comes shining through his eyes
I don't need no cold water to make me realize that

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana...

I love my dog as much as I love you
But you may fade, my dog will always come through.

Na, na, na, na, na, na, nana...

I love my dog, Baby, I love my dog. Na, na, na...
I love my dog, Baby, I love my dog. Na, na, na...
Thank god...

...the weekend is here. the news this week has been so disturbing it's taken my breath away. so this song occurred to me (and I'm listening to it right now).

I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh and
I saw the photograph and
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.

I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
but I just had to look
Having read the book.
I'd love to turn you on

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on

Even though it's not really... cheerful, this song makes me happy

"Careful" -Guster

And you walked out when I asked you to stay
As usual you will get your way
You closed the door and stumbled down to the street
Where you wring your hands
And you drag your feet there
Where the words can't find you
To crawl inside you
I'm ringing all the warning bells
Careful or you'll hurt yourself
Others lie, lie, lie, they adore you
I'll be the one to tell you
Careful or you'll hurt yourself
Gonna try, try, try till the morning
But you can't hide standing under these stars
They know everything, they know where you are
You're in your head, you're all turned around with it
And they're shining down their light to bring you back again
Back where I can find you
To crawl inside you
I'm ringing all the warning bells
Careful or you'll hurt yourself
Others lie, lie, lie, they adore you
I'll be the one to tell you
Careful or you'll hurt yourself
Gonna try, try, try till the morning
All you want to see is make believe
It's nothing but way down underneath
I'm ringing all the warning bells
Careful you don't hurt yourself
Others lie, lie, lie, they adore you
I'll be the one to tell you
Careful or you'll hurt yourself
Gonna try, try, try till the morning

Posted by steff on Fri, 07/16/2004 - 9:07am.
wallflowers. just imagine the italics, will ya?

"So long ago I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend
They said she died easy of a broken-heart disease
I listen through the cemetary trees

I see the sun coming up at the funeral at dawn
The long broken arm of human law
Now it always seemed such a waste
She always had a pretty face
I wondered why she hung round this place

Come on try a little
Nothing lasts forever
There's got to be something better
Than in the middle
Me and Cinderella
Put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight

She said it's cold
It feels like independence day
And I can't break away from this parade
But there's got to be an opening somewhere here in front of me
Through this maze of ugliness and greed

I seen the sun up ahead at the county line bridge
Saying all there's good and nothing else is dead
We'll run until she's out of breath
She ran until there's nothing left
She hit the end--it's just her window ledge

Come on try a little
Nothing lasts forever
There's got to be something better
Than in the middle
Me and Cinderella
Put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight

This place is old
It feels just like a beat-up truck
I turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn

It smells of cheap wine and cigarettes
This place is always such a mess
Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn
I'm so alone, and I feel just like somebody else
Man I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same

But somewhere here inbetween the city walls of dying dreams
I think her death it must be killing me

Come on try a little
Nothing lasts forever
There's got to be something better
Than in the middle
Me and Cinderella
Put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight"

These are for the current weather here (we think the north tower of the res hall high rises may have been struck by lightning around 6:30).

One day you'll look to see I've gone.
For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.
Some day you'll know I was the one.
But tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.
And now the time has come
And so my love I must go.
And though I lose a friend,
In the end you'll know, oooh.
One day you'll find that I have gone.
For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.
Yes, tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.
And now the time has come
And so my love I must go.
And though I lose a friend,
In the end you'll know, oooh.
One day you'll find that I have gone.
For tomorrow may rain, so I'll follow the sun.

Rain, rain on my face
It hasn't stopped raining for days
My world is a flood
Slowly I become one with the mud

But if I can't swim after forty days
and my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again

Downpour on my soul
Splashing in the ocean, I'm losing control
Dark sky all around
I can't feel my feet touching the ground

But if I can't swim after forty days
and my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again

Calm the storms that drench my eyes
Dry the streams still flowing
Cast down all the waves of sin
And guilt that overthrow me

But if I can't swim after forty days
and my mind is crushed by the crashing waves
Lift me up so high that I cannot fall
Lift me up
Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again

Lift me up - when I'm falling
Lift me up - I'm weak and I'm dying
Lift me up - I need you to hold me
Lift me up - Keep me from drowning again

Walking distance from the $5 large pizza.

And while the rain WAS something, at least it brought the temps down a little. I'd forgotten what it was really like here in summer. You get used to how the ocean makes it feel cooler, even when its 90 miles away. But I'm not complaining, this is STILL much better than winter, I'll complain about the cold. Complaining about the heat AND the cold is just whining.
And besides, how can one complain when the Cardinals are 7 up on the cubbies and Edmonds keeps reaching over the wall and bringing home runs back into the park?

I assume
Posted by umrguy on Sun, 07/18/2004 - 2:40am.
...by the $5 large pizza you're referring to Domino's, which I happen to be right across the street from (in the big building). And I still say the massive Papa John's billboard sitting right at the edge of the Domino's parking lot is possibly the greatest advertising coup I've ever personally witnessed.

Also, what's your definition of cold? I mean, depending on how things go, I don't consider it cold until at least mid-November, typically until then, it's just "chilly". Although I recall my freshman year, when one of the girls in our dorm, Holly, who was from Alabama, was sitting out wearing a winter coat like in October, while my roommate walked by in jeans and tshirts :)

Actually, looking again at your username, I should've realized that yes you are indeed here now.

...by $5 pizza I meant Little Caesar's. And for anyone visiting Rolla for the first time, aside from Stonehenge, I think the next greatest landmark the town has to offer are the guys that Little Caesar's gets to stand on the side of the road for hours upon end holding a sign advertising said $5 pizzas.

A girl from Alabama in a dorm at UMR. A girl, maybe. Someone from Alabama, doubtful. But a girl from Alabama beats all statistical probabilities (which only someone from UMR would take the time to disprove).

The username: yeah, I'm not very creative, and few but me would ever bother to change it because they moved.

*That* $5 pizza, don't know how I forgot (probably because they've been out there for several months, and I've come to ignore those guys).

No, seriously, girl from Alabama. I still exchange emails with her every so often :) Although, to be fair, I think she was only here the first year, she transferred to some other college in MO... and the rest of her family moved up to Missouri, and I taught her younger brother the other year when I was a TA.

I always thought "Tricks for John" made a good band name.

Of course I grew up with hair bands and 70's rock rather than indie and emo and alternative.

I still can't tell the difference between emo and the rest of the whiney, college-angst, indie scene. Not that I know much about any of it. I also can't tell when Metallica ceased to be heavy metal and became alternative.

/me shrugs

People should also not take the above as a criticism. I still have all the angst I had in college and a Metallica album around here somewhere...ah, a tape I left in my car and melted. Ok, so I don't really have a Metallica album any more.

Does this make it a dysfunctional album?

This looks like a good place to stop.

Completely off topic- but when I saw this I thought of someone on this board...

No, I don't think it applies, and I sincerely hope that it never does. But it still made me chuckle.

It's well we cannot hear the screams

Shouldn't someone have registered outrage over this post by now?

Oh, c'mon, do.
It'll be entertaining.
At least for a moment.
