Perhaps part of the problem was that he managed to sit through an entire showing of Event Horizon.

Doesn't speak very well about his intellect in general.

Pizza and ice cream has been the traditional Saturday supper in my family for forever.
I have great respect for tradition.

If you've gone to rathergood.com and seen the kittens swearing, you've heard this one- but could you make out the lyrics?...

Eat what you are while you're falling apart
And it opened a can of worms
The gun's in my hand and I know it looks bad
But believe me I'm innocent
I'm fearful I'm fearful I'm fearful of flying
And flying is fearful of me
I covered my eyes when she told me the news
Turning me on with my lightsabre cocksucking blues

Are you coming?

Nicotine stained on account of her crutch
And I'm aching from fucking too much
I know what I do but it all comes to you
Did you sell me to wanderlust?
I'm fearful I'm fearful I'm fearful of flying
And flying is fearful of me
I covered my eyes when she told me the news
Turning me on with my lightsabre cocksucking blues

Are you coming?

Paul...

Jeez...see what happens when I don't check up for a day or so. The 'kids' get all rambunctuous.

Would you want your kids to read that? Or my kids? Or your mother? Or MY mother?

Ummm...

Actually...
Posted by paul on Sun, 12/07/2003 - 4:10pm.
...my kids go to rathergood.com anyway, so they've heard that song- not that it makes any more sense if you read the lyrics or not. (Hell, I've heard *much* more suggestive stuff from Muddy Waters and Jellyroll Morton, and I wouldn't stop them from listening to blues.) And I think that my oldest son reads this site as well. *shrug*

Oh, and as for Mom- her sense of humor is pretty close to mine. *grin* I can't speak for your mom, though.

Well put it this way, I'd prefer not to show my mother that stuff. So perhaps you can just post the link and not the lyrics? Maybe even edit it now to put in asterisks???

Posted by paul on Sun, 12/07/2003 - 4:40pm.
Actually, this raises an interesting point, something I've been arguing with people for years.

Why is there such a big thing against using certain words around kids? I mean, I can understand not using them around a five year old who may repeat them at inappropriate moments, but once a kid is old enough to have some discretion, what's the big deal? As long as they know when not to use them, and don't use them constantly, why try to shelter the kids from those words? Isn't it better to make sure they just know how and when to use them properly? If you make those words completely verboten it just means that they'll get an extra thrill out of saying "fuck" just to shock people, which leads them to use them incessantly. Want to see that in action? Hang around a bunch of college freshmen sometime. They're as bad as contractors.

Frankly, I don't really shelter my kids very much. I know that they see some of the ugliness in the world and acknowledge it so that I can discuss it honestly with them and give them a more mature perspective on it and understand it. I see my role as a parent to be more as a guide, someone to show them how to deal with the world rather than someone to shelter them from it. As someone who was very sheltered for a lot of years, I strongly believe this to be the better way- they won't get caught by surprise later on.

My openness in such things as posting the above lyrics reflects that. They're just words, and only have power over you if you let them.

Oh, and I can't edit the above, ParU- once someone replies to it, it's graven in stone.

Hey! Link!

Word power

Paul, your post echoes things I've said about how I've raised my children. In fact, some of your points are almost word for word! I also have tried to be a guide, using TV shows and news reports, etc., as discussion topics.

And I always told my kids that words only have the power that you give to them. Just don't say certain words in front of grandma or at school. I also told them if I caught them neglecting their vocabulary, the rules would change. I didn't mind if they swore like sailors at home--the only time I got mad about language was when they were fighting. I didn't object to any words--only the hurtful intent behind them. They knew just about every "swear" word I did by the time they were five. And I'm proud to say both my kids turned out great.

They're just words. Really.

Don't mind me

Given the weather around here lately, this song's been in my head a lot:

If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.
They might as well be dead.
If the rain comes, if the rain comes.
When the sun shines they slip into the shade
(When the sun shines down.)
And sip their lemonade.
(When the sun shines down.)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the weather's fine.
I can show you that when it starts to rain,
(When the sun shines down.)
Everything's the same.
(When the sun shines down.)
I can show you, I can show you.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the weather's fine.
Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines,
(When it rains and shines.)
It's just a state of mind?
(When it rains and shines.)
Can you hear me, can you hear me?
If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.

And yeah, those backwards parts are actually like that in the song.

Darkness falls and she
Will take me by the hand
Take me to some twilight land
Where all but love is gray
Where I can't find my way
Without her as my guide
Night falls, I'm cast beneath her spell
Daylight falls, our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn
And burn eternally
She's a mystery to me
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
In the night of love
Words tangled in her hair
Words soon to disappear
A love so sharp it cut
Like a switchblade to my heart
Words tearing me apart
She tears again my bleeding heart
I want to run, she's pulling me apart
Fallen angel cries
Then I just melt away
She's a mystery to me
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
Haunted by her side
It's a darkness in her eyes
That so enslaves me
And if my love is blind
Then I don't want to see
She's a mystery to me
Night falls, I'm cast beneath her spell
Daylight comes, our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn
And burn eternally
She's a mystery to me
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's...a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's...a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl

If any of you are thinking of Christmas shopping online this weekend, remember you can click on the Donate link and go to Amazon.com and with each purchase Eve gets a bit of change! Doesn't she deserve it?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog,
And we'd begged her not to go.
But she'd left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door into the snow.

When they found her Christmas mornin',
At the scene of the attack.
There were hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now were all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been takin' this so well.
See him in there watchin' football,
Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle.

It's not Christmas without Grandma.
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig.
And a blue and silver candle,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.

I've warned all my friends and neighbours.
Better watch out for yourselves."
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Is there something that you're trying to say?
Don't hold back now
It's been a long time since I felt this way
So don't hold back now
I purposely forgot about
Loving anyone
'Cause I'm the only one who has
Who has been stepped upon

Is there something that you're trying to say?
'Cause I can take it
'Cause I grew up a man this way
If I'm hurt I'll shake it
I'll crawl back into my cave
That's how I'll make it
Cause out of all this hurt we have
Beauty thus become
Beauty thus become

In the mourning I can see the signs
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that you were trying to hide
In the mourning I can see the signs
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that you were trying to hide

Wishing all the best for you
And now I'll say goodbye
'Cause all the shit that we've been through
Put wisdom in my eyes
So walk away don't turn around
'Cause I won't be standing here
'Cause all the lies I've been living through
Are becoming very clear
And beauty thus become

In the mourning I can see the signs
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that I was trying to hide
In the mourning I can see the signs
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that I was trying to hide

Then you conned me into thinking
That all I had was you
The small insinuations
Were cutting me through were cutting me through
And now I stand alone here
Stronger then before
And I'll never go back never go back never go

In the mourning I can see the signs
No wonder I could never keep you satisfied
In the mourning I can see inside
Myself and all the things that I was trying to hide...

Hello,
Is there anybody in there
Just nod if you can hear me
Is there anyone at home
Come on now.
I hear you're feeling down
I can ease your pain
And get you on your feet again
Relax
I'll need some information first
Just the basic facts
Can you show me where it hurts

There is no pain, you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain, you would not understand
This is not how I am
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick
There'll be no more aaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying
When I was child,
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone
And I have become
Comfortably numb....

---------------------------------------

If there's a tear on my face
It makes me shiver to the bones
It shakes me babe
It's just a heartache that got caught in my eye
and you know I never cry I never cry

Sometimes I drink more than I need
Until the T.V.'s dead and gone
I may be lonely but I'm never alone
and the night may pass me by
but I'll never cry

Take away take away my eyes
Sometimes I'd rather be blind
Break a heart break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone

'Cause that's all I've got to give you
believe me babe it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin it ain't never been tried
and you know I'll never cry
and you know I'll never cry
and you know you know you know you know
I'll never cry, I'll never cry

Break a heart break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone

'Cause that's all I've got to give to you
believe me babe it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin it ain't never been tried
and you know I'll never cry
I'll never cry

For a variation on the cold pizza-breakfast of champions thing, there's a place here that does cold cheese pizza. It's a cheese pizza, piping hot, that comes with a container of cold, freshly shredded mozarella to pile on top of your slice. A friend ordered some while I was over at her house a few weeks ago, and it was heavenly.

I need to say hello

light the fire piano

and it started to show
tonight there'd be ice cream
ice cream for crow

sun cream by day
ice cream for crow

crow pants the scarecrow
crow dance ah ho ho

you can hee and haw
laugh and scratch
ha ha ha
ha ha ha
boss and toss
don't shake my hand
give me your claw
two tears in a haystack

tonight there's gonna be
a feather treatment
beneath the symbol
we'll all assemble
oh how we'll fly
oh how we'll tremble
cut the cake
we'll all get well
turn up the speakers
hop flop squawk
it's a keeper
ice cream for show
ice cream for crow
now now that's it
now you can go

Time for a song!

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
'Til they got a hold of me.
I opened doors for little old ladies,
I helped the blind to see.
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm getting' real shot down
And I'm feeling mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm getting' real shot down
And I'm, I'm getting' mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

My dog bit me on the leg today.
My cat clawed my eyes. (Nice guy...)
Ma's been thrown out of the social circle,
And dad has to hide.
I went to church incognito.
When everybody rose, the Reverend Smith,
He recognized me,
And punched me in the nose.
He said,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
He said, you're sick, you're obscene.
No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
He said, you're sick, you're obscene.

"That was one, now here's another!"
A little more appropriate for my situation...

Money, get away
Get a good job with more pay and you're O.K.
Money it's a gas
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
New car, caviar, four star daydream
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money get back
I'm all right Jack keep your hands off my stack
Money it's a hit
Don't give me that do goody good bullshit
I'm in the hi-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a Lear jet

Money it's a crime
Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie
Money so they say
Is the root of all evil today
But if you ask for a rise it's no surprise that they're
giving none away...

Is it just me, or is the North Berkeley area around Shattuck little different from Piedmont?
