\"Rememeber how you were worried that maybe the math had worked out that we\'d each had our own bottle of wine? I don\'t think that\'s a problem; I think that\'s just the truth.\"

Hey kids -- Eve here. Sorry much about the quotes and slashes -- I still haven\'t fixed the version of PHP that we\'re using. Soon, sorry, promise. :-)

oh, hell, might as well leave a friday song while i\\\'m here. it\\\'s my friday now, and i probably won\\\'t be back for a while anyway.

hey!

what makes a man?
is it the power in his hands?
is it his quest for glory?
give it all you got
to fight to the top
so we can know your story

now you\\\'re a man (man)
a man, man, man
now you\\\'re a man (man)
a manny, manny, man
a man, man, man (man)
you are now a man
you\\\'re a man
now you\\\'re a man

live it, live it

what makes a man?
is it the woman in his arms?
just \\\'cause she has big titties?
or is the way
he fights everyday?
no, it\\\'s probably the titties

now you\\\'re a man (man)
a man, man, man
now you\\\'re a man-man (man)
man-man, man, man-man
now you\\\'re a man (man)
m-a-n, man, man
man-man, man
now you\\\'re man

i went to war for my country and all i got was this lousy stump.
Friday song.

Just because we haven`t had one in a while.

Workin in the sun, a-scrapin down the tar
If we made a run fer it, we wouldn`t get far
Shovel on a stone, diggin deeper down
Every day a good day that you above ground

Hear that crow a-laughin at me
Rain comin down on the hangman tree
Swing that shovel, and push that dirt
Brady got it in the back, you know it gotta hurt

One day last week, when the boss man slept
Stopped shovelin for a while and we all made a bet
Who could run an catch a frog, or grab a dandelion
Billy got caught, he in the hothouse fryin

Hear that crow a-laughin at me
Rain comin down on the hangman tree
Some people gone missin, some people have died
You never know when God`ll kick you offa this ride

Been cuttin me a notch on the bunkhouse floor
One for every year, and now I`m countin forty-four
Swing that shovel, and push that dirt
Brady got it in the back, you know it gotta hurt

Workin in the sun, scrapin down the tar
If we made a run fer it, we wouldn`t get far
We toil and strain, we kick and scream
We may be just a drop of rain a-swimmin in a dream

And another

Nothing special about it, really, except it`s the first song I`ve managed to upload to CITYBagel in a long, long time:

Tell not a word that you heard it here
But there`s a big truck waitin` tonight at the pier
Comin` in on an east-bound boat
Now, don`t be late for delivery––here, put this in your coat
It`s a strange weight from an exotic locale
Don`t worry about the cops, `cause they`re in on it, pal
Just pick it up no later than tonight at three o`clock
And bring it to the warehouse––here, put this in your sock

No one left to save you
Nobody will return
You run so fast, you catch on fire
You`ve just gotta burn
Yeah––

Chorus:
Goin` southbound
Follow that sound
Long line of cars
Just a-movin` out of town
You`ve got this job
But you don`t know how
And everybody does
What nobody will allow

Full moon shines like a big cue ball
Someone fishin` on the pier, might as well stall
Repaint the car, change your license plate
How ya spell relief? Must be somethin` that you ate

All this is a secret
As common as that dirt
We`ll rely on your expert eye
Here, put this in your shirt
Yeah––

Chorus repeat x2

And we`ll all be waiting so long
Wait so long
We`ll all be waiting so long
Wait so long, wait so long

Now if you get caught, don`t tell `em about me
The last one who did, well, we tied him to a tree
Out in the high desert, by an ant hill
Haven`t been back there since––guess he`s swingin` there still

All this is a secret
As common as that dirt
We`ll rely on your expert eye
Here, put this in your shirt
Yeah––yeah! yeah! yeah!

Chorus repeat x2

Goin` southbound...
We`re goin` southbound...
We`re goin` southbound...
We`re goin` southbound...

It`s funny I never noticed before how much Stan Ridgway uses apostrophes.

Hey, it sounds better than working at Wal-Mart.

I had to read that one a couple of times, before I got that one. Or maybe it\\\'s jet lag, as -- in unrelated off-topic news -- I have just arrived in Pittsburgh and will stay for the year. Yay!

Oh, and first post.

Synchronicity

I too am jetlagged, having just arrived in Indiana from Hong Kong last night. And I too am soon headed for Pittsburgh... should be there next Tuesday if all goes well. Didn`t we talk about this once already? Grad school at CMU?

Steff, did we leave the IPIP borg car at your place? I bought a bunch of (totally legit) CDs in China, so I`m all set to navigate and DJ. Although we should maybe wait until I can go more than 2 hours at a time without falling asleep.

Sort of
Posted by peegee on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 7:47am.
Yeah, I had mentioned it before, but at that time it was only a possibility, now it\\\'s a reality. To be precise, I am a postdoc here at CMU, but I think that still falls under grad school somehow. At least I am doing no teaching only research, so I hope I will get some bright ideas and write some papers and all that.

All this jetlag!

Drinking is easier. And cheaper. And you don`t necessarily end up in Pittsburgh.

At least they know their math-fu is solid. I can`t work an abacus while sober.
Huh? My post-summer plans? Um... let`s not jinx `em.

What are you trying to say?
Posted by jcharles on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 2:02pm.
You got something against Pittsburgh? Huh? Do ya?

Actually, I`m pretty darn excited about moving to Pittsburgh. It is so many steps up from the podunk post-industrial town I`ve been in for the past few years. It`ll be easily the most metropolitan place I`ve ever lived. I mean, my city in China was probably bigger population-wise, but it was also kind of podunk industrial, especially compared to other cities in China. Not that I didn`t enjoy every second of being back there last week. My favorite park... favorite restaurants... close friends that I haven`t seen in more than 2 years... sorry, what were we talking about? Abaci? I can`t use them either, although they are fun to play with.

You keep neatly avoiding the whole IPIP thing. Which is fine, if that`s really what you want to do. I wonder if that thread is still out there somewhere... Aha! http://www.inpassing.org/node/view/1190

Cleavagemobile
Posted by steff on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 7:38am.
let\\\'s take that instead; if the borg car is supposed to be at \\\"my place\\\", that\\\'s problematic since i\\\'m all but placeless right now. *grin*

if the cleavagemobile doesn\\\'t have a cd player that can play mp3s too, we will, of course, have to retrofit it. i can probably swipe a satellite radio setup too, and i\\\'d be happy to navigate and DJ until you\\\'ve caught up.

i wonder which branch of mathematics produces bottles of wine?

Mobiles
Posted by jcharles on Mon, 07/24/2006 - 8:32am.
I`m, um, not sure I`m qualified to ride in the Cleavagemobile. I mean, I am undoubtedly hot stuff, but... yeah. More toward the ``tall and thin`` end of the spectrum. Perhaps that was TMI. But then, wasn`t Matt allowed to ride in the Cleavagemobile? *stops before these speculations cross several state lines*

On the other hand, I do have a cute little Civic, with a CD player (which I have never used, because I always forget that it`s there). Maybe mine can be the borg car.

You know what we should do? We should set up an IPIP section on citybagel, and post pics or video or stories or whatever of whatever small IPIP gatherings we can drum up. Sort of like steff/Som`s ``collect them all`` principle of In Passing In Person. Subject to each person`s agreement as to what info about them (including pics) they want shared on citybagel, of course. Peegee and I could start... no, wait. Mia & PGS already sort of did that, right?

Whaddya think?

Thinking
Posted by peegee on Wed, 07/26/2006 - 1:32pm.
Now that I am finally on the other side of the Atlantic, relatively to the far side (relative to the US) of said ocean, I\'ll gladly contribute (for now, with my presence) to whatever somewhat sensible IPIP projects I can.

Being of that certain genetic disposition, I too cannot ride the cleavagemobile, so for the (pre-apologies to militant whatever you call it when you complain about people using words that don\'t exist and hence make little sense except to its inventor) volouptuousnessly challenged among us there should be some alternative means of transportation. And I am not thinking of the bus. Although otherwise buses are fine with me. I\'d like to ride the as sung about by Donald Fagen of \"Steely Dan\" fame Kamakiri, if I may.

If only...
Posted by jcharles on Mon, 08/07/2006 - 1:46pm.
That does sound like a pretty sweet ride. But for now you`ll have to put up with my Civic. My unregistered, rapidly losing a muffler Civic... you know, maybe we should just take the bus after all.

Also, if only I had a decent Internet connection, or a phone, sensible IPIP projects would be much easier to organize. Ah, the trials of moving. At least we got my books unpacked last night. Now maybe I can find out, definitively, how many I have. In between bouts of calling my landlord about our dysfunctional bathroom facilities and searching fruitlessly for my one working clock.

You know, a drink sounds delightful. Any other IPers in the Pittsburgh area who want to join peegee and me for a drink and some possible picture-taking?

Danes in the US?

Coming late to the thread here. We allowed a Danish scientist to enter the US? Oh no! The next thing you know he\\\'ll want to do things like draw cartoons and speak freely and we can\\\'t have that!
