If they haev been living in Texas for 23 years they would have progressed passed the cowboy stage and already be mexican flaminco dancers

You know you're tired

When you sit here thinking "How does one dance like a pink bird from Florida?"

Oy!

FlaminCO
Posted by Lola on Mon, 03/29/2004 - 7:40pm.
I said Flaminco not flamingo. Although I do think that in a pass life I was a flamingo but thats another story, yet being a flamingo in a pass life sorta goes togather with this cowboy hindi woman, i guess.

Yes, I stated that I had been tired at the time of the misread. And, perhaps you should know, just because I think you should, it's spelled "flamenco."

You dance on one leg, of course! :)

Oh

And in a pink feathery outfit, no doubt.

Unless you live in a place where shrimp are in short supply, in which case, you're dancing in a white feathery outfit.

I would consider that a compliment. :D Anyway, that's a swan. hee.

Well, yes
Posted by Apple on Fri, 03/26/2004 - 10:27am.
But many people don't know that a flamingo can be white, and thus the mistake would be made. Whether it's a good or bad thing, I don't know enough about her to make a decision. I was just saying the mistake would be made.

I can see how that would happen.

Except that the people are Hindu and the language is Hindi. I wasn't going to critique Tim on that, since it doesn't affect the humor. Much.

so the plural of Hindu is.........Hindus?

Where the heck is Ahmedabad? What the heck is Ahmedabad? A state? A higher dimension? A frame of mind?

Sounds suspiciously like Strongbadia or something.

(*post-Google search comment*) A city in India? Ah.

No comment on the whole "Indian becoming a cowboy" thing from me. Nope. None.

I think some kudos...

Ought to go to Eve too for hearing and spelling the name correctly. If you think that's easy, you try that on a trip sometime.

Dad, dear, that's the silliest thing you've ever given me credit for. You've got too much parental pride. :-)

And no, I didn't spell it right, but I googled it first, and Google's got a spell checker. :-)

Happy best day of the year, everybody! Drink your drink of choice, just don't turn your Guinness green.

May you all have the luck of the Irish that are lucky, not those that were involved in the whole potato famine, land, lives and heritage stolen by the British, etc. folks. Dont' have their luck.

Parades are dangerous
Posted by Cebu on Wed, 03/17/2004 - 10:53am.
We have the 2nd largest St. Pat's parade here in Sav'h. Apparently one of the cars in the parade today lost control and plowed into the crowd. And I think some band marchers ahead of them, too.

I don't like fox news, but it's the site that worked the best at the moment. And I can't remember the fancy way to post a link so you'll just have to work a little extra to read all about it. ;)

I wonder what in the heck happened to the driver.

St. Paddy's Day Parade - Rolla Style

All right, technically this one was on this past Saturday, but we had 126 entries. Go here for pictures (including myself and some friends).

Also, we celebrated the holiday with two days off from school, and a full week (or longer) of drinking last week. Also, check here for some pictures of the St. Patrick's Court arriving a week ago in Rolla.

Cowboy is a state of mind....
Posted by Social Neanderthal on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 10:34am.
...There are plenty of Native Texans who would never be considered 'cowboys' and plenty of imports who ARE 'cowboys'. We've got a houseful of Native Texans but no real 'cowboys'.

If you move somewhere and really like where you are, shouldn't you enjoy the culture and become a part of that community? I know someone who moved to France years ago who now speaks English with a French accent and has a very European outlook on things. Nothing wrong with that.

Many have come to the US and dove right into the American culture and I consider that a good thing. Why try to turn where ever you live into what you left? Wouldn't it have been easier just to stay home if that is what you wanted?

Go Cowboys!

Sooo... I'm assuming those are organizations of some kind, probably athletic, that you support? Which would make JLSeagull an "athletic supporter"?

I mean, I watch The World Series every year and catch bits and pieces of The Super Bowl and I haven't heard of any of those teams, like, ever.

A bit ...

Berkeley centric, aren't we Matt? Cause, of course, there are no professional sports teams in the East Bay, this time of year (the Warriors definitely don't count).

Aw, not for reals, Apple. I just started out with a not-so-sly "athletic supporter" pun and used that as a jumping off point to chide the lack of Texas teams in championship games in the last decade or so.

I'm still trying to decide whether having one of my typical drinking sessions tonight (five or six NorCal microbrews) can qualify as a St. Patrick's Day celebration. It looks like my peeps have all given me the hand. Maybe wearing my new green four-leaf clover Guinness boxers will make it okay.

And no, Apple, there will be no photos.

Posted by JLSeagull on Wed, 03/17/2004 - 11:09pm.
"...lack of Texas teams in championship games in the last decade or so"?!?

Let's see, last ten years? Super Bowl Rings, check...Stanley Cup, check...NBA Championships, check...I guess Texas doesn't have a World Series in the last ten years so maybe you're on to something. Points of interest, of the four teams I mentioned earlier, all have been to the playoffs in the last five years, three of them were in the playoffs last year....the only Texas team to not make a playoff appearance in the last ten years...the 2-year-old Houston Texans.

Posted by Matt on Wed, 03/17/2004 - 11:36pm.
Really?

Hmph. I'll be damned.

No, really. I'm sure I will. It just seemed an appropriate thing to say. I'm also waaay too lazy to attempt arguing with you, in case... wait... San Antonio Spurs... Houston Astros... maybe Houston Oilers... I must be getting old. The memory's fading fast.

Texas Champions!!!
Posted by Social Neanderthal on Thu, 03/18/2004 - 10:16am.
Don't forget the Houston Aeros hockey team, they won the league championship for whatever hockey league they were in a couple years ago. Who woulda thought Texas could have a couple of championship hockey teams.

Then we have Rice University winning the NCAA Baseball Championship last year [with a roster that had about 75% of the players from the Houston area]. And don't forget the little league team from Houston winning the US title.

We have established the problem with the Houston Astros is not enough local talent.

And the Houston Texans didn't make the playoffs, but they did beat one of the super bowl teams [Carolina] and came close to beating the other [New England].

It is just a matter of time and it will be Dallas and Houston in the Super Bowl!!! Woo Hoo!!!

For a second there, I don't know why, I read "twenty-three years" as "twenty-three minutes". So I was a mite confused, both about why the old woman would miss where she came from already, and why the old woman would already consider herself a cowboy.

Ease up, Paul. Maybe the old lady and her family are big football fans and wear blue and silver on as many occasions as possible. Or, if they went into ranching after they got here, they really might be cowboys. Or maybe they just like showing their enthusiasm for living there. Unless Eve tells us she was using an exaggerated and phony Tex accent, we should give her the benefit of the doubt.
Urk.
Posted by paul on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 9:01am.
I know too many people who take the whole "going native" thing a bit too seriously. Kinda sad to see, really. I mean, if you're an American in London, for god's sake don't adopt an accent! And if you're a yankee in the south, don't try to sound like a good ol' boy! (And no, I am not referring to any specific person here- I was just using a couple of examples.)

Oh, and FP!

Y'all funnin' me?
Posted by ParU on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 4:13pm.
Why shucks, Paul... I tend to take on accents, subconsciously, no matter where I go. Plus I can talk like I'm from 3 different parts of Texas, or 'Bama or 'Louisana or Geooorgia or 'Caroliiiinna if I want to. And I ain't no Yankee. I was raised in the South (well Southern California, but still...) Course I've got 'kin that fought on both sides in the 'War of Northern Aggression' too.

adopting an accent, I often tend to mimic the speech patterns of those around me to fit in... plus in London, I'd be suffering from too much Fab Four, Monty Python, and Red Dwarf :D

Posted by peegee on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 1:30pm.
I don't know about Red Dwarf, but the Fab Four hail from Liverpool and Monty Python had their roots in Cambridge and Oxford, and I think accentwise those are all worlds apart from London.

Matt kinda nailed it I think
Posted by umrguy on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 11:08pm.
I know that those aren't London accents, and I would personally imagine that my "accent" currently is execrable (although I once had an exchange student tell me that she thought it sounded a bit posh). However, it would be hard for me not to even at the beginning try to work in my fake British accent.

-There's someone in my head, but it's not me.-

Posted by Matt on Tue, 03/16/2004 - 3:46pm.
I don't think umrguy was associating his first comment that closely with his second. Which is to say, he was making generalizations about fine examples of British culture. Besides, if you want to get specific, which part of London? East End is vastly different from West End and the North is different from the South. Plus Michael Palin has a different accent than John Cleese, and Terry Gilliam isn't even British!

So I'm just sayin'.

Plus, if she's a teenager, that means she was born in Texas. Native-born, even. I don't care where my parents were born; if I grew up in, say, Yemen instead of SoCal, I think I'd have a sliiightly different outlook on life.
