I'm sure Gillian Anderson is a wonderful person, but Dana Scully truly kicks butt.

I would have called August, but I would have insisted on neoprene, and I'm not sure what would be worse to deal with - the men who don't want to see me in a wetsuit, or the men who'd prefer it.

Lawrence of Arabia... fond memories.

My father keeps trying to get his beloved progeny to watch it, because of a line he quotes all the time. Apparently, when questioned about where all his money goes, the main character (haven't seen it, so pardon the bad paraphrase, please) says, "I am a river to my people."
This is what my father says whenever his daughters ask for money. He also repeats this quote to his friends an co-workers who ask about how we're doing in school. He he.
I'm sure fathers of multiple teenage girls out there can relate...

Philistine.

Okay, granted, I'm heavily biased because of my job, but so be it.

The thing I found most intriguing about Lawrence is that, as his status grows, so does the elegance and quality of the trappings on his camel. By the end, he's got these incredible, collector-quality saddle bags that are worth four figures, at least.

One of the things that startled me in Casablanca was that Bogart's character was supposed to be 38 years old, but didn't look anything like 38. And actually, he was 43 at the time.

Going back to the topic of dialects, see the namelink for an interesting version of the Lord's Prayer. (work safe)

And one cute fact about Casablanca. I saw a still shot of Humphrey Bogart sitting down between takes where he was going to do a close up with Ingrid. He had wooden boxes (about 6" tall) strapped to his shoes. Cause he was shorter than her.

Taragirl - you're a Philistine.

And while I love Casablanca I found out that it wasn't really that big a hit when it came out. It did so so at the box office. It only became a hit in the 70's (60's?) when some colleges in Boston (where else?) started running it. Boston - trend setter for coolness.

All my husband asked for was Citizen Kane on DVD. Every year. Every Holiday. Finally I got it for him for his Birthday and guess what? He mentioned it to his staff once and they all chipped in. How rude! So he returned my tape for Lawrence of Arabia. I haven't watched either and don't plan on.

If it's not in color, it isn't any good.

I just re-read that comment and it reminded me of the very difficult time I had trying to buy a camera film in Singapore one day. It was due partly to my accent and partly to my pronunciation.

After a number of difficult and failed attempts at "May I please have a film," a few hand gestures and one more effort resulted in a light dawned upon the young serving girls face as she said, "Ohhhhhhhh you want a filem, taking great pains to make clear to me the correct pronunciation of filem."

Oh what fun we had ...

Y'know, it's really hard to find Casablanca on DVD. It's got to exist, right? I mean, there's plenty of more-obscure movies on DVD now. But none of the video places near my house seem to have it.

And the hell of it is, it's been a few years since I've seen that, and I never really took note of it until now.

And on an unrelated note, last night for the first time I sat down and watched "Casablanca" all the way through. I don't know why I had never done so until now...
