Such a school snob, Par U. You know, for a bunch of people whose ancestors were the rejects of Europe, y'all are a snotty bunch.

I mean, we Canadians were European rejects too but we don't think we are better because of it. And we certainly are not school snobs.

Alice - Boalt is a good choice and yoda is correct. In Law Schools there are a few 'top' schools (Harvard, Stanford, Boalt and a few others) a whole bunch of 'normal ones' and another whole bunch of 'cheap' ones.

IMHO of course.

Boalt would be a great choice! It's in the top 10 law schools...and it's a public school, which means it's considerably cheaper than private schools. namelink is an epinions review someone made about Boalt. go bears!

It was sooooo neat to see Andrew's post (about 60 ago) about Portersville. It's weird to see people you know on a site like this, when you expect everyone is some distant, vague, outline of a person you will never see...
and it turns out the guy downstairs is one of them. He he!
PS, do any of you Berkeley-ites have an opinion about Boalt Hall? I am about to start applying to law schools, (panic attack, LSATS, panic attack) and I was curious.

I have a variation on the childhood angst theme. I always tried to teach my kids that there are many opinions about what happens to people when they die. I told them I lean towards reincarnation as the most likely, IMHO. Anyway, when my son was about 4 he started getting very depressed, and it turns out he was worried that he would live forever and it would be sooo boring! I tried to comfort him by saying I might be wrong and death is the end, or that even if I was right, he wouldn't remember from one life to the next!

My daughter at about the same age was overcome with grief when a gameshow host of a show we watched died. It was Jack Barry from Joker's Wild. She loved that show. Ha!

(He was famous for getting in trouble in the 50s gameshow scandal.)

Kids! They both grew up to be fine people, though.

Some time back my daughter realized that we're all mortal, and got very weepy over the thought that someday I would die. (I have no idea what triggered it- just all of a sudden there she was, crying her eyes out.) I acknowledged that yes, someday this would happen, but not any time soon. This was not very comforting to her at that point, so I told her that, given the way medicine is progressing and given my family's history, that I figure I'll hit 120, so she'd better be nice to me because I'll be around for another 80 years. That last line at least got her to chuckle, and then she was able to get past it.

But if it's true, if I do reach 120, then she's going to be 90 and have her own worries...

My song contribution:

I heard it for the first time this morning and I can't stop thinking about it. It's very sad. As I said to Girly earlier, it makes me want to hurl myself off a cliff, but there aren't any here. Anyway, on to the perky Friday song:

Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
Id play a song that would never, ever end
How Id love, love, love
To dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
Hed make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
Id play a song that would never, ever end
Cause Id love, love, love
To dance with my father again
Sometimes Id listen outside her door
And Id hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know Im praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you dont do it usually
But dear Lord shes dying
To dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream

Friday song.
I've been waking up with the chorus of this song going through my head like a mantra.
Maybe I'm headed for India.
anyway
the only Alanis song I can stand:

how 'bout getting off of these antibiotics
how 'bout stopping eating when I'm full up
how 'bout them transparent dangling carrots
how 'bout that ever elusive kudo
thank you India
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence

how 'bout me not blaming you for everything
how 'bout me enjoying the moment for once
how 'bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
how 'bout grieving it all one at a time

thank you India
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence

the moment I let go of it was
the moment I got more than I could handle
the moment I jumped off of it was
the moment I touched down

how 'bout no longer being masochistic
how 'bout remembering your divinity
how 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
how 'bout not equating death with stopping

thank you India
thank you Providence
thank you disillusionment
thank you nothingness
thank you clarity
thank you thank you silence

Yeah? So? (Heh.)

To find parking at Berkeley Bowl, 1) never go on Sunday, 2) seriously weigh the pros and cons of parking illegally in the Walgreen's parking lot next door, and 3) park on a side street and walk. I've seen it done. It's not pretty, but there you go.

Or just move to a place a couple of blocks away and walk there. I know I do.

Kent - there is no way to park at Berkeley Bowl (or anywhere else in Berkeley for that matter). The only time I was able to park there was when they were closing and I had to wait 45 minutes for Eve to get through the 'closing' checkout.

The script is hilarious. I highly recommend it, especially if you've already seen the show. The footnotes alone make it worth reading.

Conversely, if you've just read the script I highly recommend trying to see the show. A local PBS station (KCTS Seattle) ran a 1 hour version of it this past spring, so there may be a purchasable recording out there somewhere (but be aware that it dosen't have the sonnets or the audience = id, ego, superego bits).

Silly me, I thought everyone who's anyone at least knew about The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Yes, it's three guys from California in tights and Converse All-Stars. They even do the sonnets. I've only read the script, but that alone is hilarious. A few of my friends saw it when they did a theater tour of London. Which pretty much meant hanging out in the West End for a week.

Heh, any of you seen or heard of the play "The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspre (Abridged)"? I saw it 3 times when it was showing in Minneapolis. It was billed as "All 37 plays in 97 minutes by three guys in tights." Absolutely hilarious.

Anyway, they end with doing Hamlet, then they do Hamlet faster, then faster again, and then backwards. Very amusing. The fastest and backwards versions had about a dozen lines each. That's certianly simplified!

From Lois McMaster Bujold (A Civil Campaign):

"So in the play, Prince Hamlet comes home for his father's funeral, to find that his mother has married his uncle. ...Hamlet gets a tip-off that his old man was murdered by the uncle. Unfortunately, he can't tell if his informant is telling truth or lies. So he spends the next five acts blundering around getting nearly the whole cast killed while he dithers."

Still one of the greatest descriptions of Hamlet I've ever read....
