When I lived in the 'hood, people would put unwanted items out front, thinking if anybody wanted any of it they could help themselves. The garbage men would haul the rest away. Sort of eliminated the middle man (Goodwill). Sometimes people put out fairly decent stuff. I put out some pretty good stuff myself when I moved away, and a lot of it was gone before moving day.

But no one wanted used mattresses. Ever.
